The lockscrew or clamp both radially locates the bushing in the liner and holds the bushing in place. The lockscrew, Figure 10-24, is the most common form of locking device. These screws generally mount the bushings on either their slip-renewable or fixed-renewable sides. The screws are made with a shoulder under the head as shown. For mounting bushings on their slip-renewable side, the shoulder provides the necessary clearance needed to rotate the bushing for installation and removal. When mounted on the fixed-renewable side, the underside of the head securely holds the bushing in place.

Guide bushings are a capable and inexpensive upgrade, however they don’t see their way into instrument-making as much as they should. This introduction is designed to raise awareness of their importance and how to select the right guide bushing system for your router. Breaking down how a guide bushing functions and what advantages they have to offer for our work allows us to develop jigs and systems that are just as meaningful and powerful. This might be a good solution for the Festool adapter ring, since it sits too tight within the router base to allow for any adjustment for centering. @Inner10You only need the mandrel to center the template adapter itself. Once that’s in, then you can just screw on the bushings and they will be automatically centered.

Most manufacturers produce bushings specifically for their routers which are usually simple and quick to fit, but restricted to working only with routers of that brand. The range of bushings that a manufacturer makes available will be limited in comparison with more universal systems, however this isn’t to say that you are stuck without options. Most jobs that guide bushings excel at can be achieved using one or two workhorse bushings rather than an expansive collection of them. By closing up the opening in the base of your router to match the diameter of smaller bits, you will reduce the risk of getting small pieces of wood between the bit and the plate opening. This lessens the chance of kick back while running your router. The bushings also provide support for smaller work pieces, increase dust collection efficiency and also help reduce tear-out. The simple 30mm/35mm fitting dimensions make it an easy job to produce custom bases that accept a Porter-Cable bushings using two commonly-sized Metric Forstner bits. Here’s some advice when considering differences in bushing design. Use the template to trace the pattern onto the workpiece. Then, cut most of the waste away with a jig or band saw, staying roughly twice the offset distance from the line. Removing the bulk of the waste greatly reduces the load on the router, and the chance of splitting which can be dangerous. Steel bushings may need a little “help” to stay tight. Machine bushings are used to shim up on shafts where space needs taken up. Another common material in which bushings are made is neoprene.
